Children and Their Mental Health

Mental health is a broad term that refers to a person's emotional, psychological, and social health. It influences how we think, feel, and act.

Mental health is different from physical health. Our body is all connected, so a person's oral health can have an effect on their mental health. According to the NIMH, one in five children between the ages of two and 17 has a diagnosable mental disorder.

When Should You Get Your Child Evaluated by a Professional?

The mental health of a child is completely dependent on that child's parent or guardian. Parents put a lot of emphasis on making sure their children are physically healthy, but they sometimes overlook the mental health of their children.

The mental health of a child consists of their emotional state, personality, and behavior. Mental health concerns can also include eating disorders, substance abuse, addiction, mood disorders, and more.

If your child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, you may want to have them evaluated by a mental health professional:

  • Nightmares
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Intense fear
  • Lack of interest in social activities
  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
  • Poor academic performance
  • Lack of concentration
  • Abusing substances
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Engaging in reckless or dangerous behavior
  • Frequent crying

Childhood Mental Health Disorders

Children can experience issues with their mental health just like adults. Sometimes, people exhibit signs of mental health disorders in childhood that develop into diagnosable disorders later in life, and other times, children exhibit signs of mental health disorders that resolve in their teenage years. In both cases, children's mental health needs to be monitored and treated with the same attention as mental health disorders in adults.
